Chatting up Mister USA 2024

How did you come to be Mister New York before going on to win Mister USA?  Had you ever done male pageants before (and will you do more)?

Winning Mister New York was honestly a journey of self-discovery. I’ve always had a passion for fitness and modeling, but pageants were new territory for me. I never really envisioned myself in that world, but once I got the opportunity, I thought, “Why not?” The confidence and discipline I built through fitness carried me through. I think the pageant world is a bit of a hidden gem, especially for men, and if I felt like it aligned with my goals in the future, I could definitely see myself doing more. I like how they push you outside your comfort zone. It’s not just about looks; it’s about character and resilience.

How was your experience with Mister USA compared to Mister Universe?

Mister USA was an incredible experience—so much more than just a title. The brotherhood I found there was amazing. Everyone was supportive, and we really lifted each other up through the process. You get to know the guys on a deeper level than you’d expect. As for Mister Universe [Cormac is the first runner-up], the scale was just on another level. There were so many people from all over the world, each with their own story and journey. The camaraderie was still there and definitely on a level higher than the Mister USA; there was a lot more of the creator/influencer type which was amazing for networking, but it was more intense because the stakes were higher. Both experiences taught me the value of teamwork, but in different ways. It’s not just a competition; it’s about connecting and building lasting relationships.

You are now 2.5 years sober – congratulations. How has that journey been for you and what advice do you give to others?

Thank you! It’s been a rollercoaster. Sobriety isn’t an easy journey, but it’s been the most rewarding. There are days when you feel like you’re on top of the world, and other days when the temptation is hard to ignore. But every single day, I’m learning to trust myself more and more. If there’s anything I could tell someone in a similar position, it’s that your worth isn’t defined by your past mistakes. It’s about taking small steps every day, even when it’s hard. Trust the process and don’t be afraid to reach out for help when you need it. There’s strength in vulnerability. Definitely, one day at a time

Did you lose friends (or lovers) over your decision to go sober? How did it affect your relationships overall?

There were people who didn’t understand or support my decision. It was tough, but it also made me realize who was truly aligned with where I wanted to go in life. It wasn’t easy losing connections, but in the long run, it allowed me to build healthier relationships and regain trust in older relationships too. I learned that sometimes the people who are meant to stay in your life will be the ones who respect your growth, even if it means changing the dynamics.

Regarding your time on Love Island – do you look back on it with fondness? Did it seem like you were turning a page into a new chapter of your life—like going next level—by doing a popular reality TV show?

Looking back on Love Island, I have fond memories. It was a massive chapter in my life that took me way outside of my comfort zone. Reality TV has this way of forcing you to evaluate who you are when the cameras are always on. In some ways, it did feel like I was leveling up. It pushed me to be more authentic, more vulnerable, and to really understand myself in the process. But also, I was pretty lost in who I was as a person and was battling addiction before and after the show. So it was a big risk, but I learned so much, and it’s a chapter I look back on with gratitude.

What is the most memorable experience you took away from being on Love Island? Anything about the behind-the-scenes of filming reality TV that surprised you?

The most memorable part for me was the genuine friendships I made. We were all in this unique situation together, and those bonds are something I’ll always cherish. As for behind the scenes, I don’t think people realize how intense it is. The cameras are rolling constantly, and while there’s a lot of fun, there’s also a lot of pressure. It’s a lot of long days, and you really have to learn how to maintain your energy. But definitely have some friendships to this date with some of the guys, so I’m grateful for that.

With such a busy schedule between your fitness app, modeling, and coaching, do you find time to date or have a relationship?

I’ve been in a relationship now with my beautiful girlfriend Johnnie coming up on a year now. We connected a few years ago online, but it only started in 2024 and I ended up moving out to Arizona just a few months ago to be with her. One of the best decisions I’ve made. So, I’m excited to start my life with her. She’s an amazing person and I’m so lucky to have her.

What is your favorite experience in the fashion/modeling/TV industry? Any fashion campaign, runway show, or commercial that left a particularly lasting impression?

Great question. I’ve done a lot through the years but one that sticks was this Reebok campaign I did that had my face in a lot of stores in America. It’s more about my sobriety because I started doing a lot of work in my recovery and this shoot in particular was a testament to my hard work. Also, I did a golf campaign for PXG golf in Arizona and that’s how me and Johnnie started talking, so maybe that’s my favorite one!!

What’s next for Cormac Murphy?

Right now, I’m focusing on expanding my fitness app and coaching, helping people improve their lives both physically and mentally. I want to keep building a community for friends and sobriety that’s supportive, healthy, and empowered. As for the future, I’m always open to new opportunities—whether that’s in modeling, TV, or other creative projects. I’m not putting myself in a box; I’m staying open to what’s meant to come. Life’s an adventure, and I’m excited to see where it takes me next.
