Cuffing Season 101

Tips to snag your winter bae

Fall is upon us. Say goodbye to the dog days of summer and hello to all things pumpkin spice, and sweater weather. Cuffing season is the timeframe where singles seek their temporary bae to weather the cold, dark fall and winter nights. Scouting for your potential bae takes time and patience so most singles begin their quest in late August and make their final selection before Thanksgiving. If you’re seeking a cuffable partner this fall and winter, check out a few helpful hints on how to lure in the perfect snuggle buddy.

  1. Make a list. Write down the characteristics of your ideal fall/winter bae. Is he funny, easy on the eyes, generous and has a freaky side? Does he love binging Netflix? Would you want him seeing you in your favorite pjs? What attributes does your boo need to have to score a seat next to you when the days get shorter, and the nights get colder?
  2. Start early. Labor Day Weekend marks the unofficial end of summer, so it tends to be the time people hang up their party shoes and start searching for a suitable suitor. It’s best to start compiling a list of potential candidates as you never want to put all your eggs in one basket. Start swapping IG handles and sliding in the DMs of your current crushes. Get between 5-7 options so you can give yourself the best chance at securing the right partner.
  3. Observation period. While you’re texting, chatting, and hanging out with your roster of potential cuffing partners, be sure to observe their behaviors. Take note of their sense of humor, their disposition, their ability to be consistent and dependable. A seasonal bae needs to serve a purpose. They are there to provide companionship, fun, intimacy, and friendship. People cuff someone special for the winter because it is a time when life slows down. We go into hibernation mode and want someone to stay warm with at night.
  4. Assessments are necessary. Don’t allow your lust to overshadow your logic. If you notice a negative trait in someone that you’re interviewing for the role of your winter love interest, make note of it. Understand that their negative trait will only be magnified when you’re hunkering down and preparing for a snowstorm. Is this negative trait big enough to be a deal breaker? Can I deal with this for the next six months? Be honest with yourself. If the answer is no, cut your losses.
  5. Let’s spend the night. Every single person on your roster needs to have one sleepover before you make that final decision. The reason is because you will be spending a lot of time alone during these next few months. Fall/winter bae is the person you plan to be cuddled up on the couch with when the temperatures drop. Most nightlife slows down during this season, so you’re more prone to be inside and cozy with your loved one. Ensuring that your potential choice is someone you’re comfortable spending the night with is a step in the right direction.
  6. Make your decision. The cream always rises to the top. You’ve spent time interacting with each person on your roster. You’ve chatted, texted and spent time getting to know each other. Some have stepped up to the plate, while others have slowly disappeared. Your five options have now dwindled down to your top two. You think long and hard and go with your heart. You’ve made your selection!
  7. Set the rules. You’re officially set for the season and can prepare for several weeks of cozy sleepovers and cold weather cuddling. Take some time to set up the expectations for your partner. How often do you want to see one another? What happens if real feelings get involved and one person wants to extend the relationship beyond the winter? Figure these things out before you proceed any further or prepare to encounter some potentially messy drama.
  8. Order your matching pjs. This is the part you’ve been waiting for! You can order those adorable matching pjs and prepare to flood your friends’ timelines with #baegoals pics.
