Like all newspapers and magazines of the day, Playgirl had its funnies too. But they were nothing like everyone else’s: sexually suggestive and often crudely indecent, they captured the revolutionary spirit of the publication –and its readers’ imagination– perhaps more effectively than its articles.
Different cartoonists, some more talented than others, lent their eye and their sense of humor throughout the 70s. But Playgirl’s comic strips began to fade in the 80s/90s, as the magazine made room for more pictorials, more ads and its gossip columns.
They were gone by the aughts. We’re left with a trove of satirical cartoons and humorous gems, integral part of both the magazine’s history and the Zeitgeist that gave birth to it.
