“Playgirl is a movement,” writes Abrams Books. “This groundbreaking magazine was never just a pale imitation of Playboy; it was a major player at the dawn of women’s liberation, featuring stories on barrier-breaking women from across the globe, articles about reproductive health, and interviews with feminist icons. All this revolutionary material could be found nestled among the tasteful and erotic male nudes that the magazine was built on (…) This wide-reaching Playgirl compendium includes not only some of the most important and engaging archival materials from across the past five decades, but also a number of new essays about the publication’s origins, its role in the women’s liberation movement, and its contributions to pop culture at large.”
Edited by Daniel McKernan and aptly titled The Official History of a Cult Magazine, Abrams’ 240-page “compendium” debuted on October 24th with a cocktail reception at Bookmarc, NY (they sure know how to throw a party). The book tour continued on October 30th at Soho House with a panel hosted by Travis Paul Martin with author McKernan and Playgirl Creative Director Mickey Boardman, and hit Los Angeles on November 3rd, with a reception and an exhibit at Circus of Books. Playgirl’s resident sex therapist, Jamye Waxman, was in attendance. The exhibit, with memorabilia, collectibles and a sexy video installation, is open every day through December 4th at 8230 Santa Monica Blvd, West Hollywood.
